PoH #56: Kamakura Jidou Home Children’s Home

Playground of Hope #56

Address: 1-6-6 Sasuke, Kamakura-shi, Kanagawa-ken

Installation date: May 22nd, 2016

Sponsor: Morgan Stanley

Background:
Kamakura Jidou Home is part of the Seionkai Social Welfare group, which also runs two senior care facilities in Kanagawa Prefecture. The home was first established in 1896, and renovated in 2003. Currently there are 73 children at the home, making it one of the larger children’s homes in Japan.
Previously the home only had a very small old play set for the younger children, as well as some spacious grounds for ball games like soccer and basketball. However, there wasn’t any play equipment for elementary school children. The closest parks with play sets are only accessible by car.
Kamakura Jidou Home removed part of their wood deck that had an old tree that was rotting away to make room for the new PoH play set and sandbox area.
Through PoH’s RLLC project, a committee of about 14 children helped to not only build the play set together with Morgan Stanley volunteers, but they painted some very artistic benches for the home. These children worked hard to help plan the opening ceremony event and BBQ party.
